La Serva Padrona

       English Version
Comic  "intermezzo" by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, 2000, Teatro Argentino de La Plata.

Comic opera with singers, puppets and orchestra.

Pergolesi performed this "intermezzo" in 1733. Contemporary with Goldoni, he's one of the exponents of the "Commedia dell'Arte". In XVIII century there was a boom of puppets that shared the stage with actors and singers in operas, ballets and "great theatre".

On this version of the play puppets and singers share the stage, being the puppets the "alter ego" of the singers like images in a mirror. Bewitched by Pergolesi the members of this heterogeneous group of singers and tightrope walkers sing and tell the story of Serpina, a servant that became the boss. The great ideas that afterwards will go around the world slide behind the comedy: equality and the right to happiness for everybody.

…"An imaginative and lucid management of generic characters and an ingenious way of showing the puppets as duplicates of the singers. Memorable theatrical effect"…"skilled work"..
La Nacion ,JAB, Aug.2002.

"Musical direction brings forward the ironic and fresh atmosphere of the original play"…"wonderful conglomeration of dualities"…"everything is fluid and without interference".
El Dia ,EG, Aug.2002

"The puppets become an expressive tool definitely present and they serve the truth within the fiction being much more convincing than the reality that opera renovation aspires to."
